Cummins: How Mega Combustion Engines Will Survive The EV War in bs7 norms

In the war of electrifying all the public and private vehicle, governments of almost all countries are looking forward to ban diesel engines from their daily uses.

Governments want to reduce their dependability on fossil fuel for their economy run.

The other reason for implementing electric energy is to reduce harmful gases in environment from diesel and petrol engine.

Government has making their rules over small vehicles only where most of the gaint machineries are running on diesel engines. So from constriction to mining, big vehicles are depend on diesel engines only.

And there’s one manufacturers to these mega engines called Cummins.

What is Cummins?

Cummins is an American company which design and develop powerful engines which are used in construction vehicles, mine vehicles and power generators used as backup energy substitute in commercial buildings.

Cummins manufactur in natural gas engine, hybrid and electric power solutions. But that company is in energy business for so long due to their use of advanced technology, components and power solutions.

list of 2025: Special bikes to be launched in this year

Cummins is currently supplying engines to super duty earth movers, marine ships, trains, war machines, Comercial trucks and buses, power generators for offices and malls.

All these machines are using commonly one engine which runs on diesel only as these heavy equipments need more torque which only Combustion Engines are capable of producing.

History of Cummins

Althogh, Rudolf diesel had invented diesel engine in 1890s but this Combustion Engine was neglected by the world for many years by automobile industry and other power consuming industry.

Clessie Cummins first realised the true potential of diesel engine and he manufactured his first ever a 8 horsepower engine in 1919 in his automobile repairing garage under license of R.M. HVID company.

This engine was started being used in farming and other small industrial purposes.

In 1929 Cummins had already did some revolutionary work in engine components. Cummins had developed fuel injectors which were able to inject fuel on high pressure. This was a big milestone in engine history.

This was the year when Cummins had developed its iconic diesel engine model-k which was in used for next 40 years in marine ships and industrial equipments.

From there Cummins became a benchmark for industrial and commercial power supply.

Introducing diesel engines in cars for first time

Cummins started using diesel engines in the cars in 20s but it wasn’t adapted by other car makers as diesel engine wasn’t taken as efficient engine till then.

In 1931 Cummins used a diesel engine car in Indian polish race where this car completed 800 kms race without any refueling break with only 117 liter consumption of diesel.

The main purpose to participate in this car race wasn’t to win the race, Cummins wants to show the world the true potential and high efficiency of diesel engine.

Revolution in commercial and industrial sectors

Now it was time to set new records for commercial vehicles, where Cummins was ready for revolution in commercial sector so they completed trip from one core to another core of the America on their truck and bus.

Now world was ready to accept diesel engines in the farming, commercial, official, marines and war machines

Why Cummins is so important for global economy

As of now all the heavy works in commercial and farm sector are needed more torque to operate machines with high load so only diesel is only source to do such job very efficiently.

So economy runs on agriculture and industrial growth so Cummins produces engines in high volume for global requirement.

The most powerful Cummins engine is QSK95 engine which produces 5000 horsepower and 25000 nm torque.

For example a tractor engine produces 35 to 40 horsepower and 100 to 200 nm torque which can operate all sort of heavy duty agricultural tasks with very ease.

So trains are using QSK series which are producing 4000 to 5000 horsepower. Trains across the world Australia, Myanmar, India and USA uses engines from Cummins.

Cummins

Ships, boats, marine are using Cummins diesel engines.

Mining is not completed without Cummins as excavator, driller, dumpers, bulldozer and haul trucks and heavy duty machinery is using Cummins engine only.

Transport industry from every part of the world using Cummins engine. A report from usa shows that in 2015 41% trucks were running on Cummins.

Even India’s biggest truck manufacturing company TATA import Cummins engine in their dumpers and heavy load trucks.

Indian army uses Cummins engine in their war machines. LT and DRDO has developed 350 light tanks which are using Cummins engine.

Other Commercial sector like offices, malls uses power supply equipments from Cummins.

Future of the Cummins in Era of electric powered equipments

When diesel engines are in its last stage due to emissions norms in 4 wheeler industry and trucks are launching with electric motors.

Everything is being electrified rapidly, so will Cummins shut down their production and stop delivering more Combustion Engines to global economy?

Well Cummins are the company who knows how to glide through pandemic when everyone is loosing their sense.

Cummins repeated its old strategies to do something new and out of the cubic.

They are going to use renewable diesel fuel and they have already developed an engine which is capable of running on renewable diesel engine hydrogen.

What is renewable diesel?

Renewable diesel is the fuel which is hydrocarbons fuel and it is made of animal fat and vegetable oil. Best part of this diesel is that it is very identical to the fossil diesel which work same chemically.

The advantage of renewable diesel is, this can be used in same diesel engine without doing any modifications in existing fossil diesel engine.

It doesn’t require a new infrastructure to build fuel station and it can be stored in existing fuel stations, which is not a case in EV infrastructure.

This revolutionary engine is based on helm platform which stands for higher efficiency lower emissions multiple fuel platforms

This engine can produce 605 horsepower and 2800 nm torque which can pass upcoming euro7 or bs7 norms with lesser emissions.

This same engine can be run on different types of fuels where engine head gasket will be same and with minor changes in fuel line it can be run either on diesel, natural gas or hydrogen fuel.

Bharat mobility global expo 2025

The reason to mention Bharat mobility global expo is that in this event Cummins didn’t even launched one engine but there are 3 engines which will not phase out diesel engines from the industry.

Cummins have launched a diesel engine L10 for commercial uses, which produces very mow emissions that it meets not even bs6 norms it is capable of meeting bs7 and euro7 norms.

In 2027 global officials has strictest emissions norms that car manufacturers have dropped to work on new engines especially diesel engines and they have shifted to electric vehicles completely.

Cummins has launched another engines in bharat mobility global expo with name bs6.7 which produces same power as diesel engines but it runs on natural gas and it can be used in heavy duty vehicles.

The fuel for this engine will be used compressed natural gas and liquid petroleum gas.

Cummins has lunched another power supply components which is hydrogen fuel delivery system.

In this equipment, cummins has used type 4 hydrogen storage vessels which are called cylinders. They can be used to store safely to use as fuel as this is very hard to store in a vehicle as cng.

Cummins type 4 storage vessels can bear upto 350 to 700 bars pressure which is higher than cng bar pressure, Which are stored in 200 to 250 bars pressure.

A hydrogen turbocharger was also launched by the Cummins in this expo event which means hydrogen vehicles can be as powerful as diesel engines are.

Conclusion

After launching these Combustion Engines it is sign that Combustion Engines Will not fade away from uses. It can be shift from fossil diesel to renewable diesel or hydrogen and Cummins Will keep serviing global economy by upgrading their technology and components to meet the emissions norms.
